I got to lead Faith Tabernacle youth group this past Wednesday and I started the meeting with this quote:
“I saw the angel in the marble
and carved until I set him free.”
I bought 45 bars of soap from The Dollar Tree
and I told my youth to let their creative juices out.
Turn this block of soap…
…into something creative.
First see something, then carve and sculpt till its free.
Here they are working away:
The result of their creativity:
From a block of soap came a pineapple, a letter, heart, jewelry box/button of death/a pile of towels, a cheesecake, fish/pirate symbol, snowman, hot air balloon, wind, a flower, a school bus, a horse.
I told the youth, if you can make something out of this block of soap, imagine what God can do if you let him carve and sculpt you.
But now, O LORD, You are our Father, We are the clay, and You our potter; And all of us are the work of Your hand. Isaiah 64:8
Humanity was created in God’s image. The bible tells us how we are His workmanship.
So he began to mold, to sculpt, to create.
Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. John 1:3
Jesus was the blueprint in which humanity was created.
First he saw someone. He saw Jesus.
Jesus, the perfect one. Jesus, the light of the world. Jesus, the salt of the earth.
Jesus the one who is crowned with glory and honor.
Jesus who is full of grace and truth and joy and compassion and mercy.
Jesus who brings healing to the sick, freedom to the captive, deliverer of the oppressed.
Jesus who sits down with sinners and prostitutes and the tax collectors.
Jesus who feeds the hungry, clothes the naked, quenches the thirsty.
Jesus who is the image of the invisible God.
He saw Jesus and then from the dust of the Earth, He saw you.
So what does that mean?
It means, since the Fall of Man, this gospel the Bible brings and proclaims and teaches and preaches is an invitation for humanity to step back into their true identity.
God is Love. And you are created to bear that image.
if you catch yourself looking at the mirror and the only words you can come up with is unworthy, unloved, not enough, i’m no good, nobody cares, i’m never gonna amount to anything, i’m a failure, i have no purpose…
if you catch yourself hating your brother, bullying your classmate, ignoring your neighbor, talking behind your sister, stealing, gossiping, doesn’t care about anyone else…
you have nothing, you’re in despair, you’re cutting, having suicidal thoughts, being bullied, you’re depressed, suffering, you feel like there is no hope…
You are created in His image.
They are His workmanship.
We all are His masterpiece.
You are loved. You have a purpose. God’s not done with you. Your story is not over yet.
There is hope. And you’ve been invited to partake in this story the Gospel is proclaiming.
All you have to do is say yes!
For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus…
– Ephesians 2:10
